BRAKE DIVISION
The Carbone Lorraine group Brake division is part of the "Advanced Systems and Materials" department. Two types of friction
materials are put together there:
Carbon/Carbon components
The Carbon/Carbon composites are mainly used in aircraft braking systems. They allow the absorption of energy released during emergency braking (An Airbus at 320,00 km/h has to stop within a distance of 1200 meters) and operate at more than 1600° C. Carbone Lorraine is the main supplier for the Airbus A321 Range.
In Motorcycle racing activity, Carbone Lorraine offers a carbon/carbon range for braking equipment.
Both discs and brake pads are made from carbon/carbon. This material is also use in Formula 1 (brakes and clutch). In these cases, it combines low weight with strong braking capacity.
Sintered Metal materials
They have a more important application range:
TGV brakes, high-speed locomotives and freight trains are made in sintered metal because of the heavy mass high speeds involved (a TGV at 320 km/h has to stop within a distance
of 3000 meters).
Carbone Lorraine is also present on the aeronautic field with brakes for Airbus A300, A310, Mirage F1, Tigers and Sikorsky helicopters. Sintered Metal materials are also used in the braking systems of military vehicles such as the AMX30 and AMX 10 tanks.
Because of strong braking energy, industrial brakes for windmills, winches or mines require sintered materials.
More recently, Carbone Lorraine has developed a complete range of Brake pads for racing cars (rally, Nascar). These products are already used by some official teams in World Rally Championship. The last family of Carbone Lorraine sintered metal products is motorcycle brake pads. This material offers an incomparable braking quality: durability, power, feeling, and efficiency in wet weather. Each product is tailored to a specific application.
2 WHEELS ACTIVITY
Motorcycle brake pads production unit
The experience acquired from our aeronautics and railway applications allowed for the development of materials for motorcycle brake systems in 1994. Our presence in racing activity since 1994 with Dominique Méliand's Suzuki Endurance Racing Team - Endurance and Superbike - and Hervé Moineau enhanced our products (sintered and carbon/carbon).
From 1996, a dozen shapes of brake pads allowed us to cover a range of sports bikes. Since then, about thirty shapes have been appearing each year to offer a complete range for all kinds of motorcycles, scooters and ATV applications. At the same time, our presence in racing activity increased and we are now present in all kinds of classes.
Carbone Lorraine choosed to develop its products for all 2 wheeled applications
(road, off road, scooter) and is now in position to propose tailor made materials to
its customer.
Close relationships with Yamaha Motor France, Peugeot, MBK and Original Equipment are an indication as the Carbone Lorraine know-how on the motorcycle field.
Our range also replies to the snowmobile, ATV and more recently to the mountain bike applications.
Our unceasing presence in racing activity allows us to keep the performance of our products and development teams at their best. Each year a new racing compound is developed in collaboration with the best teams.
Technology
SINTERED METAL TECHNOLOGY
Sintered Metal Production line
Two types of friction materials for motorcycle exist : Sintered and organics. Only sintered can meet all the demands of a motorcycle : powerful braking, overheating, braking in water, mud and sand, reaction in cold temperature.
Sintered metal brake pads are made from powders. The friction compound contains at least 10 constituents (copper, bronze, iron, ceramics, graphite..) Each of these constituents has an essential part during the friction of the brake pad on the disc (comfort, noise, performance).
Once melted, these constituents form the friction mixing. This mixture is then compressed in a mould that gives the final shape.
The resulting is then placed on its metallic copper coloured back plate and put in a furnace at 900°C. This is the sintering process : one constituent of the compound melts strengthening the material and braze it on the support.
The Brake pad is then rectified, checked and packed.
Research & Development
Motorcycle friction materials are developed in the testing laboratory. The brake pads are
first tested on the braking dynamometer then in real conditions. Carbone Lorraine has at its disposal a number of motorbikes to validate its products on road use.
More than 50 different friction materials specifically designed for motorcycle are tested every year in the laboratory. One or Two are recommended after validation to our customer in the replacement market. Some development with equipment suppliers is also undertaken.
Serious development is undertaken with the best racing teams in order to supply the best product. In these cases, the data recording are used in extremes conditions and these conditions are then reproduced on a dynamometer.
Quality Insurance
CARBONE LORRAINE has implemented the Quality Administration and Control System to meet the high quality requirements needed to ensure the best reliability for its brake pads.
The system refers to both French and international standards (ISO 9001, TÜV...).
The objective is to guarantee all manufacturing operations :
- control of raw materials and suppliers,
- manufacturing control,
- packaging, storage and deliveries control,
- a quality equivalent to the OEM requirements.
